Why Nutritional Supplements? By Steve Kellenberger, D.C.

Before YOU started to become YOU…

Before you came into the world, you were already fighting to survive the process of developing into a healthy human being. And, as you might guess, nutrition plays a very important role in that development! How well and how long you live is in large part related to your nutrient intake and lifestyle habits. Malnourishment is a thing! Malnourishment is avoidable (but your gummie nutrients are not the way to do it!).

This fight for survival continues every day of your life as you encounter pollution in the form of toxic chemicals in the air, food, body care products, makeup and even from new cars, carpeting and furniture that leech invisible toxins into your lungs. The same goes for toxic metals like mercury, aluminum, cadmium and others. These are just a few example of many challenges that you face on a daily basis.

It’s not hard to reach the conclusion that the healthier our diet is, the better we are equipped to handle these challenges. Healthy meats, nuts, seeds, fruits and vegetables all play a role in our health.

BUT, what happens when even the healthy foods become malnourished?

In the article, Dirt Poor: Have Fruits and Vegetables Become Less Nutritious?, the topic of depleted nutrients in our soil such as zinc, vitamin A, vitamin C and potassium was addressed. One study covering a period of time from 1975 to 1997 revealed that nutrients have fallen in the range of roughly 21 – 37 percent. Now in late 2021 we have to ask, is there any healthy soil left to grow our food?

In the book Empty Harvest, written in 1995, the authors, Bernard Jensen and Mark Anderson, were alarmed about farming habits, soil erosion and therefore the depletion of nutrients in our food supply. That was 26 years ago! Just imagine how much more our soil is depleted is today!

Supplementation of our diet with nutrition in a bottle has unfortunately become a necessity to maintain even a basic level of health. It's not enough to eat a healthy diet and stay active anymore.

Further more, almost every expectant mother knows that a prenatal vitamin/mineral supplement will improve the odds of having a healthy baby. We need to be nurtured and nourished. The process never ends. The health of your skin, bones, brain, immune system and every single cell all depend upon the basics. (proteins, fats and carbohydrates, enzymes, air, water, phytochemicals, vitamins and minerals).

Whether it’s turning off a cancer gene or whether you would like better hair, skin and nails, you need good nutrition. Without nutrition you don’t exist!
